Customize your travel perfume wardrobe: signature fragrances for the discerning traveler

Perfumes always have a fixed place in your luggage, regardless of whether you are planning a business trip or a private vacation. As the capacity of your luggage is limited, the question arises as to which perfume from your inventory should accompany you on your trip. When traveling by air, the airline regulations must also be observed, as you are not allowed to carry an unlimited amount of perfume with you. This article will give you helpful tips on the ideal travel perfume.

What should I look out for in a travel perfume?

First of all, the type and size of the bottle is typical of a travel perfume. For a short trip of a few days or weeks, a small amount of your favorite fragrance is sufficient. You should avoid large bottles that you use at home in order to save space in your suitcase. Many perfumeries offer typical travel perfumes in small fragrance atomizers that take up very little space in your cosmetics bag. The small atomizers usually have a volume of 20 or 25 millilitres. There is an equally wide range of refillable small spray bottles for your handbag, into which you can simply fill your eau de toilette or perfume.

Travel perfume - permissible quantities for air travel

If you are planning a flight, you are allowed to carry perfume in your checked baggage and in your hand baggage. In hand baggage, the container may have a maximum volume of 100 milliliters and must be kept in a transparent and sealable plastic bag. Please note, however, that only one plastic bag containing gels or liquids is permitted in hand baggage. So if you already need another product, such as a medicine, in your hand luggage, the perfume belongs in the suitcase.

Perfume containers up to 500 milliliters in size are generally permitted in checked baggage in Europe and the USA. You are allowed to transport up to two kilograms of perfume in your suitcase. To be on the safe side, however, you should check with the airline whether this also applies to your individual destination.

Stowing perfume safely in your luggage

To ensure that your travel perfume arrives at your destination intact, you should pack it well. A securely sealable plastic bag or a metal container are a good choice in case your perfume does leak. If you decide to fill your favorite fragrances in small refill bottles, these are available in metal. This avoids the risk of the flacon breaking. Glass flacons in plastic bags can be packed well protected in your suitcase if you roll them into items of clothing.

Business perfume, niche or luxury fragrance: which fragrance should you take with you on your trip?

The limited capacity of luggage and airline regulations only allow for a small selection of favorite fragrances. Which perfumes are ideal for your planned trip depends on the purpose of the trip. A business trip places different demands on your fragrance than a vacation trip or a trip for a festive occasion. A classic business perfume, for example, is more restrained than a fragrance for an elegant party in the evening.

The term perfume is generally used as a generic term for the various fragrance concentrations. It therefore includes
    • Eau de toilette with around eight percent fragrance oil

    • Eau de Parfum with a fragrance oil concentration of up to 15 percent

    • Perfume or perfume extract with a fragrance oil content of about 30 percent

The eau de toilette is rather volatile due to its low fragrance oil concentration and is suitable for an afternoon stroll through the city during your trip or for a morning business meeting.

The ideal business perfume

Regardless of the occasion, the fragrance you choose should always suit your type and mood, because first of all you need to feel completely comfortable with your perfume. Elegant and invigorating, fresh fragrances are ideal for everyday office or business wear. The bouquet should surround you discreetly without being too intense. The same applies to business appointments during business trips. At the same time, the fragrance should accompany you over long working days and should therefore not evaporate too quickly.

A light luxury perfume is ideal as an eau de parfum. It is lighter and yet long-lasting due to the lower fragrance content compared to a highly concentrated perfume. An exclusive eau de parfum is therefore ideal for everyday business wear.

Fine perfume for the evening

An elegant perfume for the evening can be more intense than a business perfume. While fresh fragrances with citrus accents are ideal for daytime wear, floral, oriental, balsamic or powdery notes are also suitable for evening wear as a perfume, perfume extrait or light eau de parfum.

The longevity of the perfume and the quality of its fragrance depend on the ingredients. An intense luxury perfume is therefore another ideal companion for evening occasions during your trip, in addition to the business perfume.

What is a niche perfume and what is a luxury perfume?

A luxury perfume is an exclusive fragrance developed by an excellent perfumer. Its quality depends on the composition of various aromas and the quality of the fragrances. High-quality, largely natural and often rare essences are used in a luxury perfume. Examples include Damask rose, natural jasmine leaves or the rare resin of oud wood. Due to the rarity of some ingredients, some luxury perfumes are only available in limited quantities.

A niche perfume is distinguished from other fragrances by its rarity or uniqueness. They are often experimental compositions of different fragrances or even individual creations for a limited group of people. Niche perfumes can also contain fragrances that are not generally perceived as fragrant, such as fried bacon, petroleum or tar. The combination with citrus, woody or floral notes ultimately leads to an extraordinary olfactory experience. These extraordinary luxury perfumes are considered works of art. They are creatively handcrafted from exquisite ingredients by selected perfumers. Exclusive flacons are also typical.

Niche and luxury perfumes can create light, fresh notes for the day and intense fragrances for the evening.

Create your own individual travel perfume every day: fragrance layering

With fragrance layering, you create your own unique fragrance by layering different perfumes on top of each other. Some manufacturers even offer special perfumes for fragrance layering. The different fragrances are coordinated in such a way that they harmonize perfectly with each other. You will need different fragrances in your luggage for layering. You can combine fragrances from one fragrance family and apply related or different fragrances on top of each other. It is important that the heavier fragrance forms the base as the first layer. For optimum results, only apply the next layer after the previous one has dried. Combinations of body lotion, body spray, deodorant and perfume are also suitable for fragrance layering.
